Singapore said that it plans to create around 10,000 jobs in the tech industry over the next three years in an effort to establish the country as a global hub for technology.

A new government office opened up, called Digital Industry Singapore (DISG), which aims to work with the private sector to unlock opportunities presented in this digital age.

Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information S Iswaran revealed this initiative in an opening speech at the Smart Nation Summit.

“In Singapore, our vision is for a digital economy where every business is digitally empowered, every worker is digitally skilled, and every citizen is digitally connected,” he said.

He also mentioned that technology and the digital economy are integral to the fabric of the industry and business in the region as it also affects the lives and jobs of its people.

The government decided to work together with the private sector as “trusted partners and co-creators of solutions”.

DISG said in a statement that the new office aims to bring together 45 existing officers from the Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA), Enterprise Singapore and the Economic Development Board.

“DISG will seek to achieve our mission to establish Singapore as a global-Asia technology hub,” said Chief digital industry officer of DISG, Kiren Kumar.
