Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the world's digital infrastructure company, and PT Astra International Tbk (Astra) established a joint venture to create Indonesia's digital infrastructure to accelerate digital transformation for multinationals and local businesses. Indonesia's digital transformation program aims to digitize 30 million MSMEs by 2024, spurring economic growth and meeting digital infrastructure needs.

Equinix and Astra formed a joint venture with 75% and 25% equity stakes, respectively. This joint venture will help local businesses and multinationals capitalize on new and emerging technologies like hybrid multi-cloud, 5G, IoT, AI and more by combining Equinix's global digital infrastructure expertise and Astra's extensive experience in Indonesia.

"The Indonesian government is strongly committed to accelerating digital transformation nationwide. This joint venture with Astra taps into the rising potential of digitalization and illustrates Equinix's ongoing commitment to serving the Indonesian community with capacity at scale to match computational, storage and edge requirements. We look forward to working with Astra to unlock new opportunities for Indonesia's bright digital future," said Asia-Pacific Equinix President Jeremy Deutsch.

President Director of Astra, Djony Bunarto Tjondro, further stated, "The collaboration with Equinix is based on the growth of Indonesia's digital economy and Astra's focus on accelerating its digital transformation. We hope this joint venture will strengthen Indonesia's data center infrastructure and help businesses by providing a comprehensive data center that is more integrated, modern, easily accessible and operated with the spirit and principles of sustainability."

Before expanding in Indonesia, this joint venture will build and operate JK1, an International Business Exchange (IBX®) data center in Jakarta. The eight-story JK1 IBX data center will include more than 1,600 cabinets and 5,300 square meters of colocation space when completed in 2024. JK1, located in Jakarta's Central Business District near major internet exchanges, will provide local and foreign firms in Indonesia with the digital infrastructure and thriving ecosystems needed for optimal performance.

JK1 will use Equinix's cooling array to help Indonesian organizations meet economic and environmental goals. Equinix was the first data center to commit to 100% renewable energy and carbon neutrality by 2030 using short-term science-based targets. These targets complement Astra’s 2030 Sustainability Aspirations.

Indonesia will be the largest ASEAN colocation market by 2027 because of rising retail demand and hyper-scale activity. By 2027, the colocation market will be worth US$1.2 billion. Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Alibaba Cloud have introduced cloud regions for Indonesia. The country will be Southeast Asia's second-largest public cloud market. Equinix and Astra's joint venture will benefit from this high-potential market's untapped growth.
