The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has published new regulations that are expected to alter how telecommunications companies operate in an effort to combat the growing problem of unwanted spam calls and messages.

Beginning May 1, the new regulations are intended to reduce the volume of daily spam calls and texts that Indian mobile phone users receive.

All telecommunications providers must implement steps to stop their clients from receiving unsolicited commercial communication (UCC) as a result of the new legislation. These filters enable the system to recognize and block promotional and fraudulent communications frequently employed by deceitful predators to defraud clients of their money.

Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are two of the telecom giants that have agreed to adopt the AI filter service in accordance with the mandate. Airtel officially confirmed this through an official statement, and Jio is expected to begin offering the service shortly.

TRAI has further instructed the telecoms to prohibit allowing promotional calls from 10-digit mobile numbers, which are frequently exploited by spammers and fraudsters.

The telecom regulator has also mandated that telcos make the Call ID feature available to allow users to see the image and name of the caller on their screens before answering the call. Jio and Airtel, meanwhile, have reportedly objected to the service due to privacy concerns.
