Optus has launched a new feature called Optus ScamWise to protect its customers from the increasing threat of fraudulent activities.

Providing a Safer and More Secure Online Experience

Optus ScamWise is designed to provide users with the tools they need to recognize and prevent prevalent scams, specifically ones that involve fraudulent websites imitating online retail stores of renowned high-street brands. This education empowers users to recognize red flags and avoid falling victim to scams, thereby protecting themselves from financial loss and identity theft.

By highlighting key indicators of fraudulent websites, such as suspicious URLs, poor website design, and lack of secure payment options, users can distinguish legitimate retailers from fraudulent ones. This increased sense of security fosters trust in online platforms and encourages responsible online behavior, benefiting both individual users and the broader online community.

Increasing Scam Reports

The National Anti-Scam Centre has received a concerning increase in reports regarding fake websites, where scammers are making deceptive copies of popular online shopping platforms. In response, Optus is implementing robust measures to tackle the overwhelming volume, successfully blocking about 2 million calls and nearly 2.8 million SMS’ weekly.

“We are working to better protect our customers and make it harder for scammers to prosper. Optus ScamWise not only helps protect the Optus customer community but also lets them help protect their wider circle too,” said Matt Williams, Optus Managing Director of Customer Solutions.

Optus ScamWise offers real-time information on the latest scams and the number of scam calls and SMS’ being blocked on a weekly basis. With the addition of this feature, Optus users can remain alert and easily pass along important scam-related information to their families and friends.

The new feature reflects Optus' commitment to combating scams, especially in light of recent disclosures by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), which recently revealed that Australians lost over USD3.1 billion in 2022.

Optus has reportedly blocked over 380 million scam calls and 130 million SMS scam messages since December 2020 through a range of tools and services.
