UK-based telecom provider Vodafone and Japan-based SoftBank jointly announced they have entered into a strategic alliance in mobile services for enterprise customers. This alliance “enhances commercial and operational support for Vodafone's multinational enterprise customers operating in Japan,” a statement said.

Qualcomm Incorporated announced results for its fiscal fourth quarter and year ended September 24, 2017. The company reported revenues of $5.9 billion for Q4 2017 compared to $6.2 billion in Q4 2016 (5 percent drop). Qualcomm said the results were negatively impacted by its ongoing dispute with Apple.

Samsung Electronics have selected their replacement for the outgoing vice chairman and CEO Kwon Oh-hyun, who surprised many industry analysts following his shock announcement that he was stepping down from his position with the South Korean conglomerate. It has been formally announced that President of Samsung’s semiconductor business, Kim Ki-nam will take over from March next year, and it was also disclosed that he will head up the device unit.

Huawei Marine announced it has commenced work on Desk Study and Marine Survey works in conjunction with key investor Tropic Science Co., Ltd. (Tropical Science) to construct the Pakistan East Africa Cable Express (PEACE) submarine cable, which connects South Asia with East Africa. With initial work underway, the project is targeted for completion in Q4, 2019.

Xiaomi’s smartphone shipments in Q3 almost doubled from a year ago, according to research from Strategy Analytics. It’s forecast that Xiaomi could become the world’s second largest smartphone vendor by 2018, overtaking OPPO, Huawei and Apple, if current momentum continues.

Nokia released its Q3 financial results for 2017 showing net sales of €5.5 billion for the quarter compared to €6 billion for the same period last year. The company reported a 7 percent year-on-year sales decrease in Q3. Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri said the company’s patent licensing business was the “clear highlight” of the quarter.
