South Korean smartphone colossus Samsung has announced that its pre-orders for its Galaxy Note 8 have surpassed the highest-ever for the Note Series. Samsung believes its latest premium smartphone which exceeded the pre-orders enjoyed by the Note 7 – will protect the market dominance it currently assumes as it faces a stiff battle with Apple to remain on the top spot.

The Mexican government has formally announced that it has secured a deal with Chinese e-commerce colossus Alibaba Group Holding in an attempt to place Mexican products and services, especially those produced by SMEs onto the much-heralded e-commerce platform that is provided by Alibaba.

Japanese conglomerate Toshiba is set to publicly announce that it will sell its prized memory chip unit to Western Digital after months of protracted negotiations, legal rows and rejected bids. Toshiba is desperately trying to offload its chip unit in order to generate funds to help pay off its debts for its bankrupt US nuclear unit Westinghouse.

The jailed Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics Co has replaced his lawyer ahead of his forthcoming appeal against the five-year sentence he was handed after being found guilty of bribery and other charges. The sentence passed down to Jay. Y Lee stunned South Korea - and the decision was subsequently described as a ‘landmark case’ in the history of the country.

Huawei has surpassed Apple in global smartphone sales consistently for June and July, according to research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse for July 2017. But with the release of Apple’s latest iPhone coming up this September, Huawei could be pushed back into third place. Samsung holds the number one spot.

At HUAWEI CONNECT 2017, Huawei and Microsoft signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Cloud Service under which Microsoft applications will be released on HUAWEI CLOUD. The two companies will initiate in-depth cooperation on the public cloud to provide the optimal experience of cloud services for enterprises and help enterprises implement digital transformation.

HTC’s smartphone unit is struggling, according to its financial results, with its August 2017 revenue ($100 million) down 54.4 percent year-on-year. Google is reportedly considering purchasing HTC’s smartphone unit, Taiwanese press has speculated, but not HTC’s Vive virtual reality (VR) business.

Internet of Things (IoT) will generate estimated US$1.8 trillion revenue for mobile network operators by 2026, driven by the early deployment of commercial Power Wide Area Networks in licensed spectrum, according to GSMA, which highlighted new figures in the IoT Forecast Database Research published by analyst house Machina Research.
