Indonesia Gears Up for Digital Leap with Opening of First National Data Center

Indonesia is set to make significant strides in its digital transformation with the anticipated launch of the country’s first National Data Center (Pusat Data Nasional/PDN 1) in June, 2025.

Situated in Cikarang, Bekasi, this facility aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s eight Fast Deliverables Programs (PHTC) and 17 national priority initiatives.

The National Data Center is a key infrastructure project that will consolidate government data and promote seamless interoperability across ministries and institutions. Currently, more than 2,700 data centers and servers are managed by various government agencies, creating challenges in terms of security, efficiency, and reliability.

PDN 1 is seen as the cornerstone of the ‘One Data Indonesia’ initiative, which is designed to facilitate centralized, accurate, and dependable data-driven decision making within the government.

In a recent workshop on Government Electronic-Based Systems (SPBE), Inixindo Jogja Director, Andi Yuniantoro, highlighted that PDN 1 is a strategic solution to the risks posed by decentralized electronic systems, such as human error, cyber attacks, hardware malfunctions, and even natural disasters.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Application has emphasized the importance of PDN 1 as the backbone of the country’s digital governance framework. Minister Meutya V. Hafid reiterated that PDN 1 is crucial for strengthening the digital ecosystem. She mentioned that her ministry is collaborating closely with Bappenas and other agencies to ensure its integration and long-term sustainability.

Minister Hafid also confirmed that PDN 1 was officially handed over in March and is currently undergoing security and operational evaluations by the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN), with a pilot phase set to launch in June.

Developed under a government-to-government financing agreement with France, the Cikarang-based facility secured a loan of EUR 164.7 million (INR 2.7 trillion). Construction began in 2022, and the center meets Tier 4 international standards, the highest rating for data centers. It is equipped with 25,000 computing cores, 200 terabits of memory, and storage capacity of up to 40 petabytes. The center’s power capacity starts at 20 megawatts, with an expansion potential of up to 80 megawatts, and includes a state-of-the-art water cooling system alongside robust security features.

PDN 1 marks the first of three planned national data centers, with future sites to be developed in Batam, Riau Island, and the new capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan. These developments are being advanced through a co-sharing scheme to expedite their completion.
