SK Telecom Launches Hack-Proof USIM Rerouting Feature

USIM Rerouting

SK Telecom has announced that they are introducing a new feature for universal subscriber Identity modules (USIMs) to prevent the risk of replicated USIMs as a result of hacking.

This function will allow users to change some information without physically replacing the USIM, starting from the 12th. It is available for both USIM and embedded SIM (eSIM) users. Users will be able to modify a portion of the user identification and authentication information stored on the USIM. By changing this information, any attempt to replicate leaked USIM data will be blocked, ensuring system security.

SK Telecom mentioned that various network functions will operate simultaneously, providing effects like a USIM replacement. This process will be convenient and quick, as user-stored information can be maintained while making changes. Unlike USIM replacement, there is no need to transfer financial certificates, T-money, contacts, etc., or undergo new certifications from financial institutions. Customers who still wish to switch to a new physical USIM can do so for free at nationwide T World stores after the USIM rerouting.

The company plans to offer the USIM rerouting solution to customers who receive the USIM replacement text and visit T World stores, similar to the existing USIM replacement process. In addition, SK Telecom will increase appointment notifications for customers who have reserved USIM replacements, starting from the 12th when the USIM inventory increases. Through the USIM rerouting solution and the expansion of eSIM self-activation, the company aims to support customers who want to replace their USIM.

Professor Kim Dong-gu, Executive Committee Chairman, Open RAN Industry Alliance, and Professor Jang Kyung-hee, Executive Committee Chairman, 6G Forum, stated, “This technology, which resets only authentication-related information through software, without the inconvenience of backing up personal data in the SIM card and resetting the app, will be a useful technology in the future as the importance of security grows.”
