Nokia has signed a contract with leading telecommunications service provider Hutchison 3 Indonesia (3ID) to provide IoT coverage to enterprises in Indonesia.

Bharti Airtel’s CTO Randeep Sekhon has called for affordable first-wave 5G smartphones in India in order to power mass consumption of the high-speed wireless network service, despite predictions from industry experts that these devices would easily gain popularity and acceptance in the next two years.

Nokia and Hutchison 3 Indonesia (3ID) have completed the first 5G end-to-end live network trial in Indonesia. The trial, which was conducted on a Nokia network on millimeter wave frequencies, demonstrates the 3ID network’s ability to support end-to-end 5G deployment.

Ooredoo Myanmar has announced the growth in internet usage brought about by the Beyond Access Myanmar Program. The Beyond Access Myanmar project aims to support Myanmar’s libraries to serve more people with critical information and services. The program saw a total increase of 117,472 people accessing the internet for the first time and nearly 9,500 people regularly using tablets/laptops at libraries in rural and peri-urban areas within a six-month timeframe.

Most of the global internet traffic today utilizes infrastructure located primarily in the northern hemisphere to link Asia, Europe and North America. Meanwhile, the southern hemisphere, which includes parts of Asia, Africa and South America is heavily connected via links coming from the North as well. However, the traffic to the southern region currently travels a longer route which may affect the internet experience of the end users.

Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, INC. and OMRON Corporation have agreed to conduct joint field trials using 5G at their plants and other production sites. As part of the trial, Nokia will provide the enabling 5G technology and OMRON the factory automation equipment while NTT DOCOMO will run the 5G trial.

With more than 15 million 5G handset services in operation (SIOs) expected by the end of June 2023, the adoption of 5G is set to be faster than the previous generations, according to new research from emerging technology analyst firm, Telsyte.
